Cellula was contracted in partnership with Fukada to manufacture a similar boring machine system (BMS) for Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI).The BMS would satisfy various seafloor applications, specifically focused on mineral exploration work. This includes Seafloor Massive Sulphides (SMS), methane gas hydrates and manganese crusts.
Fukada - "Unicorn-1" Seafloor Drill
In 2013, Fukada Salvage and Marine Works Co. approached Cellula Robotics for assistance on creating an ambitious and advanced drill system that would provide Fukada with a cost-effective mineral exploration and geotechnical sampling solution.
British Geological Survey - Tool Handling Manipulators
Cellula Robotics Ltd. (CRL) designed & manufactured the hydraulically actuated tool arm (manipulator) used by BGS to move drilling tools into and out of tool racks on their subsea remotely operated drill rig, RD2. The tool arm has 310° of horizontal rotation, 590mm of horizontal extension and 260mm of vertical compliance. The gripper jaws can accommodate tools up to 73mm diameter.
Fukada - Seafloor Excavator Tool Skid
In 2006, Cellula Robotics Ltd. successfully developed a Cutting Test Excavator for Placer Dome / Nautilus Minerals and operated it for in-situ cutting tests on their Solwara-1 orebody. The Excavator recovered 20 tonnes of material, including approximately 15 tonnes of bulk sample cuttings. Based on this, Fukada came to Cellula expressing interest in the capability to excavate a trench and take bulk samples using an excavator.
